Assessment 1 - Design Module

Design Your Blog!

Learning Activity 15: Colour Research Assignment

Open this MS Word document - and follow the instructions. It's a research assignment to develop your understanding of colour use and allow you to explore online resources that might help in your study / work.

Save it somewhere safe, then submit it for feedback from your teacher.

Learning Activity 14: Research type on the Web

Answer these questions:

What happens to the searchability and accessability of your web site if you set your type using Photoshop or Flash?

List all of your standard html typefaces you can use in your web site for mac and then PC.

List all of the things you can do to a typeface using html (hint: bold is one variation, there are 8 altogether)

Submit your answers in an MS Word file using the assignment tool

Learning Activity 13: Poster Design

Using MS Word or Photoshop, choose one of the following quotes and design a layout based on it. Size is A4, - landscape or portrait. Just type only - no illustrations. Use any typeface families and any colours.

Experiment with different sizes of type. Break the quote down into words and emphasise the words that need it. See if you can convey the meaning of the quote in the type.

"Tell me the past and I will recognise the future" Confucius (511 - 479 BC), Philosopher China

The quotes should determine how you manipulate the type - use the type confidently, experiment and have fun.

Either print it out and take a photo or even easier, take a screenshot, place into a photoshop and save it for the web and submit it via the Assessment Tool and publish it to your Flickr CertIII Media Set with a comment on how and why you arrived at the design.

Learning Activity 12: Good and Bad Type

This assignment requires you to grab a digital camera and find 5 examples of what you feel are good examples of typeface usage (eg: logos, signage, print layouts, graffitti, car graphics, t-shirts etc) - and use 5 examples of bad typeface use.

Generally, you might expect to find 'unrefined' typeface use in flyers, regional papers, community groups, newsletters, mechanic workshop signage, etc. Save your pics and submit them to Flickr with captions explaining why you think it looked bad or good.

Learning Activity 11: Match 6 typefaces to 6 shoes

This requires you to make 6 typefaces to 6 shoes. This activity places emphasis on the 'cultural influences' that determine how a typeface makes you feel.

Learning Activity 10: Your name in a typeface

Find a typeface that you like and represent it using sizes and styles in a manner similar to the Gills Sans panel below.

Learning Activity 9: Sketching Layouts

Sketch a layout for the entry page for a website. Your choice of a type of website.

- Photos/artworks (use a box with a cross in it as above)

Take a photo of each and submit them using the assignment tool for feedback

Learning Activity 8: Grid Layout

Find 2 magazine layouts that adhere to a grid. Take a photo / scan them and submit them using the assignment tool for feedback. Indicate on each of them where the grid is. Use a marker pen if necessary. Make sure you take a photo before you cover it with a pen, you may need it later.

Find 2 magazine layouts that dont appear to follow a grid. Submit these two as well. Explain why you think they dont use a grid.

2. increase
3. bold
4. congested

Identify if its an element or principle.

Take a picture/scan of it and stick it on your blog ready for feedback and submit it here using the assignment tool.
